This lecture will describe the role of Penicillin Skin Test (PST) programs as a strategy to improve appropriate antimicrobial utilization by identifying patients that incorrectly report a penicillin allergy. It will raise awareness for the potential clinical and financial benefits and role of a well-structured PST program in the acute care setting by elaborating on the impact inappropriate antibiotic allergy documentation has on antibiotic selection. The lecture will also explain the signs and symptoms of a true anaphylactic allergy to a medication, and differentiate this from other reactions or side effects. It will also describe the process of performing, preparing, administering, and interpreting a penicillin skin test, and will highlight the roles that pharmacists and technicians can play in the development and implementation of a PST program. Lastly, the lecture will provide recommendations and strategies for implementation of a PST program within an acute care facility.
